What to see

Magnificent lake festivals, glamorous villa life, merry cruises, fervent veneration of saints, artistic work, simple life and hard livelihood. With unique, authentic exhibits, the museum provides insights into the varied and often astonishing cultural history of the Five Lakes Region.

Changing exhibitions, lectures and seminars on artistic, cultural and socio-historical topics expand the insight into the region. Museum educational activities and a wide range of events make a visit to the museum an experience for young and old.

The museum team is looking forward to your visit!

Opening times

The museum is open all year round on Tuesdays to Sundays and on all public holidays from 10:00 to 17:00.

The museum is closed on Christmas Eve (24 December) and New Year's Eve (31 December).

On New Year's Day (1 January) the museum is open from 13:00 to 17:00.

Directions and parking

The museum is best reached by public transport. The Starnberg-See train station is a five-minute walk away and a number 964 bus stop is directly in front of the museum.

Motorists follow the signs to Starnberg-See railway station and from there the signs to the museum. Parking is available between Bahnhofplatz and the museum. Two disabled parking spaces are available in front of the museum on Possenhofener Straße. You can find further information on parking facilities here (in German).

Coaches can stop in front of the museum to get on and off and then continue to the Starnberg-See railway station, where there are designated bus parking spaces.

The museum is largely barrier-free. In the new building, all exhibition areas are accessible via elevator and wheelchair accessible. A wheelchair-accessible toilet and disabled parking spaces are available in front of the museum.

A visit to the historic Lochmannhaus is also possible in a wheelchair, but should be requested in advance.

An inductive hearing system is available for all guided tours and lectures.

Both buildings have folding stools which can also be used as walking aids.
